On July 23, 2010 Associated Builders & Contractors of Southeast Texas sponsored a vocational skills initiative project for The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club. Kimberly Bernard, ABC Director of Education, John Bernard, ABC President, along with Courtney Johnson, ABC School-To-Work Coordinator, instructed approximately 80 children ranging in age from 6 to 12 years in assembling “Crazy Ball” sets using PVC pipe.
These sets will be kept at The Salvation Army for the children to play with. According to Michael Perez, Salvation Army Executive Director, “The hands-on skills will set our kids on a path that will enable them to pursue successful vocational careers if they so desire or if a post-college career does not work out.” The day was rounded out with ABC providing Dominos pizza for all of the children. It was a great experience and we look forward to being a part of it for years to come.

On July 10, 2009 Associated Builders & Contractors of Southeast Texas sponsored a vocational skills initiative project for The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club. Kimberly Bernard, ABC Director of Education, John Bernard, ABC President, along with Teresa Hammonds, ABC School-To-Work Coordinator, instructed approximately 80 children ranging in age from 6 to 12 years in assembling marshmallow shooters using PVC pipe.
In addition, each child was given a pair of children’s safety glasses as they were given a brief lesson on safety. Once the assembly was complete, the children decorated their shooters and were given a handful of marshmallows to test out their finished products on the Salvation Army’s football field. According to Michael Perez, Salvation Army Executive Director, “The hands-on skills will set our kids on a path that will enable them to pursue successful vocational careers if they so desire or if a post-college career does not work out.”

ABCares participates in “Mid-County Kindness”
Associated Builders & Contractors of Southeast Texas, through its volunteer program (“ABCares”), participated in “Mid-County Kindness” on Sunday, October 5th, wherein hundreds of volunteers from Port Neches and Nederland showed up for "Mid-County Kindness" in order to aid Hurricane Ike survivors in Bridge City. Organizers called on football rivals from both these cities to wear red and show up in teams to help residents struggling in the storm’s aftermath (the event was a follow-up to Saturday night's "Mid-County Madness"). Although the event was organized and made up of mostly mid-county residents and organizations, others from across the Golden Triangle volunteered their time as well. The goal of removing debris, assisting with home repairs, clearing trees, as well as feeding many of the residents and workers throughout the day, drew individuals, organizations, businesses and churches from all over Southeast Texas, some even traveling from other states. A few of ABC’s contractor members set-up their BBQ pits in front of Bridge City High School and cooked links and boudain; the volunteers then delivered the food with bottled water to the residents’ homes.
